DOST-1 intensifies CEST in Nagbettedan, Sto. Domingo; implements project ACAD and NaKaSaGaNa

๐š‚๐š๐š˜. ๐™ณ๐š˜๐š–๐š’๐š—๐š๐š˜, ๐™ธ๐š•๐š˜๐šŒ๐š˜๐šœ ๐š‚๐šž๐š› โ€“ The Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. 1 (DOST-1) thru the Provincial Science and Technology Office โ€“ Ilocos Sur (PSTO-IS) conducted simultaneous activities today in Barangay Nagbettedan of this town as part of the implementation of the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) Program.

DOST-1 awarded one (1) set desktop computer installed with Science and Mathematics modules, the Science and Technology Academic Research-Based Openly-Operated Kiosks (STARBOOKS) with computer table to Nagbettedan Elementary School and trained five (5) teachers on the use of the software. These interventions are part of the Accelerating Community Academics for Development (ACAD) Project under the Human Resource Development area of the CEST program. Also, two units of Bio-Intensive Gardening (BIG) tools in support to Gulayan sa Paaralan were awarded to the school.

As part of the Project Naglilinang ng Kahandaan sa Sakuna Gamit ang Napapanahong-teknolohiya (NaKaSaGaNa), DOST provided lectures during the Disaster Preparedness Information Campaign in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the DOST-PAGASA Laoag. Resource speakers from DSWD discussed โ€œFamily and Community-Based Disaster Preparednessโ€ while DOST-PAGASA emphasized โ€œUnderstanding Weather/Climate Systems with its Hydro-meteorological Hazardsโ€.

Engr. Jordan L. Abad, Provincial S&T Director, provided background of the projects discussing the five (5) components of the CEST Program towards the realization of its goal of empowered and progressive communities. He mentioned activities in Nagbettedan including Peanut processing and Charcoal Briquetting under the livelihood component among others. He said that with the interventions provided, students will be encouraged to enroll in S&T courses as well as motivate them in going to school as well as enjoy S&T learnings. For the Disaster Preparedness campaign, Engr. Abad emphasized the need of informed citizen in disaster preparedness which is vital in mitigating the adverse impacts of disaster.

Ms. Merlina P. Tacbas, Office-In-Charge/Teacher III of Nagbettedan Elementary School expressed her gratitude to DOST-1, โ€œThank you so much DOST-1 for the services and technology you have shared to us. Early christmas gift from DOST. Thank you for the love,โ€ said Ms. Tacbas.

During the activity, Ms. Mary Ann B. Ofiana, STARBOOKS Regional Deployment Officer of DOST-1, served as the Resource Speaker on the operation of unit. On the other hand, DSWD resource speakers were Ms. Rhain Claris Santiago (Social Welfare Officer I), Ms Kristin Talingdan (Social Welfare Officer III), and Ms. Beberly Agam (Administrative Assistant II) while Resource persons from DOST-PAGASA were Engr. Cynthia Iglesia (Senior Weather Specialist), Engr. Charmagne Marie Varilla (Weather Observer III), and Mr. Leo Anghelo Lutap (Weather Observer III).
