Eshana Rhymel L. Parra, an incoming second-year BA Communication student under the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), secured first place in the national โCertified Ka-STARBOOKS Ako Photo Collageโ Competition, held as part of the 15th-anniversary celebration of the Department of Science and Technology - Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated Kiosk Stations (DOST-STARBOOKS), from March 30 to June 10.
With the theme "STARBOOKS@15: Crystal Years. Countless Stories. Infinite Knowledge," the contest invited participants to look back on their most memorable STARBOOKS experiences by creating a photo or video collage that captures the platform's impact in promoting accessible knowledge of science and technology.
Parra's winning piece perfectly captures the impact of accessible science and technology in communities. Her entry bested submissions from across the country, bringing pride to the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) community.
Winning the national competition came as a surprise to Parra, who shared that her journey involved numerous revisions to both her artwork and its description before finally submitting her entry.
"It was unexpected, and I feel really happy. I went through so many revisions, and there was even a time when my description was accused of being AI-generated, but I stood by my work. After everything, I'm grateful that all the effort paid off," she said.
She added, "Behind those pictures is my growth. Even if I couldn't visit their main office, I still gained a lot of knowledge through their digital services. Whether you're young or old, there's always something to learn from the different activities they offer."
Developed by the DOSTโScience and Technology Information Institute (STII), STARBOOKS is the Philippines' first science digital library-in-a-box, providing science and technology resources to schools and communities, especially those without internet access. This June, STARBOOKS celebrated its 15th Crystal Year, marking over a decade of bringing knowledge to thousands of schools, local government units, and even Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) nationwide.
