DOST Region 1 Connects San Gabriel, La Union to Digital Learning via STARBOOKS

In a significant step toward improving educational access in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 1, through the Provincial Science and Technology Office La Union, has provided San Gabriel Vocational High School with an offline Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station (STARBOOKS).

STARBOOKS, a flagship digital library program of DOST, grants students and educators access to a vast collection of science, technology, and innovation resources—even without an internet connection. This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and promote inclusive learning for students in remote communities.

Dr. Albert Mina, Officer-in-Charge of San Gabriel Vocational High School, expressed his gratitude to DOST Region 1 for their support, emphasizing that STARBOOKS will play a crucial role in enhancing the students' learning experience and providing them with valuable academic resources.

To ensure the effective utilization of STARBOOKS, Ms. Katrina Ronquillo, Senior Science Research Specialist and Provincial Focal Person for La Union, conducted an orientation session for students and teachers. Additionally, Ms. Mary Ann Ofiana, Regional Focal Person, led a hands-on demonstration on how to navigate and maximize the platform’s features. Teachers, librarians, and students actively participated in practical training sessions, gaining firsthand experience in using STARBOOKS to support their studies and research.

With the introduction of STARBOOKS at San Gabriel Vocational High School, learners now have greater opportunities to access quality educational materials, empowering them to excel academically despite the challenges posed by their remote location.

This initiative highlights the commitment of DOST Region 1 to fostering educational development and digital inclusivity, ensuring that no learner is left behind.
