DOST Region 1 Expands Educational Access with STARBOOKS in La Union Schools
January 23, 2025
by DOST 1 - Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. 1
The Department of Science and Technology Region 1 (DOST Region 1), through its Provincial Science and Technology Office in La Union, conducted a successful orientation and training session for the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk System (STARBOOKS) on January 21, 2025. The event took place at Naguilian National High School in Naguilian, La Union, and Linuan Elementary School in Burgos, La Union.
This initiative is part of DOST's commitment to improving access to quality education in underserved communities by providing innovative learning tools. STARBOOKS, the first-ever digital library-in-a-box in the Philippines, offers free access to thousands of educational resources in science, technology, mathematics, and other fields—completely offline.
The training engaged a total of 96 participants, including school administrators, teachers, and students, providing them with a comprehensive introduction to the features of STARBOOKS. It highlighted the system's potential to enhance traditional learning methods and support research endeavors. Participants also received guidance on effectively utilizing the system for classroom instruction and community development initiatives.
This initiative is part of DOST's commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that quality education reaches even the most remote communities. With the successful orientation and training, both Naguilian National High School and Linuan Elementary School are now better equipped to enhance the learning experience for their students.
