19 Sept 2024, Pasay City | A student from Carmona National High School (CNHS) was declared champion of the 2024 Whiz Bee Champion during the 2024 STARBOOKS Whiz Bee competition held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Forum Tent in conjunction with the 2024 National Youth Science, Technology, and Innovation Festival (NYSTIF).

In the tough match, Mr. Jan Patrick B. Gelasana effortlessly won against his opponents and even his schoolmate who also made it to the final round.

NiΓ±o Ryan B. Matutina, the coach for CNHS said in an interview that to prepare for the quiz bee, he trained their student representatives every three (3) hours before their classes.

β€œI’m proud, kasi out of 160+ students, kami yung pinalad na manalo. Achievement ito para sakin kasi as a teacher, makita mo yung students mong successful, iyon na lang yung parang pakunswelo especially sa mga katulad naming nasa public school teaching.” said Coach Matutina.

The rankings of the other finalists were the following: Abednego T. Sucgang of Francisco E. Barzaga Integrated High School (2nd place), Janna Marianne B. Sena of Sisters of Mary of Banneux, Inc. (3rd place), Stephen Blaize L. Gabor of Pasay City National Science High School (4th place), Princess Hannah G. Benaloga of Carmona National High School (5th place).

The winners, along with their coaches, bagged prizes such as electronic gadgets, gift certificates, Enchanted Kingdom (EK) tickets, and coin banks.

The event was sponsored by different organizations: Association of Science and Mathematics Educators of Philippine Private Schools (ASMEPPS), FrontLearners, Inc., C&E Adaptive Learning Solutions, Enchanted Kingdom, Revlv Solutions, Inc., BPI Foundation, Inc., Pagbilao Energy Corp., and TeaM Energy Foundation.

The quiz bee garnered one hundred sixty-five (165) Grade 10 student participants from the National Capital Region (NCR), Region III, and Region IV-A during the first round that decided the fifty (50) slots for the semi-finals.

The 2024 STARBOOKS Whiz Bee is a recent program of the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk (STARBOOKS) Unit of the Department of Science and Technology – Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) that promotes competitiveness among students by bringing back quiz bee events that were slowly forgotten throughout the time. The first Whiz Bee competition was held last year at the Governor Ferrer Memorial Integrated National High School.
