The Department of Science and Technology XI (DOST XI) has successfully installed a solar-powered Science and Technology Academic and Research-based Openly Operated Kiosks (STARBOOKS) in Sitio Sultana, Barangay Dongan Pekong, Matanao, Davao del Sur.

This innovative initiative marks the first installation of its kind in the province, addressing the community's lack of access to electricity and bridging the educational gap in remote communities by providing accessible science and technology information.

In a collaborative effort, the 39th Infantry Battalion of the 10th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army, the Department of Education - Division of Davao del Sur, and the Local Government Unit of Matanao (LGU Matanao) partnered with DOST XI to bring this innovative digital library to life. The ceremonial turnover was followed by a training and orientation session, where 36 enthusiastic participants, including learners from Sitio Sultana and representatives from the partner agencies, gathered to learn how to use STARBOOKS effectively.

DOST XI Regional Director, Dr. Anthony Sales, expressed his optimism about the project's impact.

"The installation of STARBOOKS in Sitio Sultana is a testament to our commitment to making science and technology education accessible to every Filipino, regardless of their location. We believe this initiative will inspire and empower the youth to pursue their education and dreams," Dr. Sales said.

Ms. Britanny Blanco, one of the volunteer teachers in Sitio Sultana, echoed this sentiment and believed that the initiative would greatly benefit the students.

“Dili lang taman ang among pag-tutor diri sa Sitio para sa mga bata, kay kaning STARBOOKS magapadayon og hatag sa ilaha og oportunidad nga mas molambo ang ilang kaalam ug kinaadman sa mga subject nga gihatag sa Department of Education (Our tutoring here in Sitio Sultana for the children doesn't end with just teaching; this STARBOOKS will continue to provide them with opportunities to further enhance their knowledge and understanding of the subjects provided by the Department of Education)," she added.

The event underscored the shared goal of fostering enthusiasm for learning and encouraging students to complete their education. Practical demonstrations and informative presentations during the orientation equipped the attendees with the knowledge to navigate STARBOOKS and maximize its benefits.

Looking forward, the DepEd plans to collaborate further with DOST to bring STARBOOKS to every school in the Matanao District. This expansion aims to ensure that all students in the municipality have access to these valuable educational resources, fostering a more informed and educated community.

Moreover, the integration of Solar STARBOOKS in Sitio Sultana moves LGU Matanao closer to establishing a community learning center in the area, eliminating the need for students to travel long distances for education.

STARBOOKS is a stand-alone, onsite research kiosk that offers free access to a wealth of science and technology information. It's designed to empower students and educators, providing valuable resources for academic and livelihood purposes (Vener Zygmond Rebuelta).
